Kaizer Chiefs moved to the top of the log after a routine 2-0 win over Free State Stars in an Absa Premiership clash at the James Motlasi Stadium on Wednesday.
Amakhosi, who finally seem to be getting back to their usual selves, took an early lead via the penalty spot.
George Lebese teased a few Stars defenders with his trickery before clipping a lovely through-ball to the overlapping Sibusiso Khumalo, who was brought down in the area by Kenyan defender Joseph Okumo.
Willard Katsande stepped up and calmly sent goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni the wrong way to give The Glamour Boys the early ascendency.
Chiefs started the more confident side but were almost punished for some overconfidence just two minutes into the match when Hendrick Ekstein started taunting his opponents in his own half and was dispossessed, allowing a dangerous counter-attack. Fortunately for the trickster, Thokozani Sekotlong's shot was on the stretch and straight at Itumeleng Khune.
Ekstein looked exciting at times but was ultimately ineffective again as his short-passing game was easily read by the Stars defenders, and his final pass was often lacking in a game that needed his creativity.
Stars were not without promise and got into some dangerous positions going forward but were unable to really test Khune, with a powerful Goodman Dlamini drive straight at Khune the closest they came besides one or two efforts off target.
Then Chiefs got a deserved second in the 64th minute through Mitchell Katsvairo, who finished coolly at the near post – with some help from a deflection off the lunging Okumu – after some neat one-touch passing outside the area between Ramahlwe Mphahlele and George Lebese, who got the assist.
Lorenzo Gordinho came close to adding to the scoreline in the closing stages but his scrambled shot from close range, which was mostly helped by a desperate defensive clearance, was kept out by Ngobeni.
Ea Lla Koto hit the upright in the final minute of stoppage time with Khune flat-footed, but it would not go in for the home side.
