Baroka secured their first win of the Absa Premiership season following a hard-fought 1-0 win at Platinum Stars on Heritage Day afternoon.
Despite being the visitors, Baroka started the better of the two sides, keeping Dikwean shot-stopper Mbongeni Mzimela busy between the posts as Albert Mothupa forced a fine save early on.
Minutes later and it was Caswell Chauke to try his luck, but could not find his range as he fired wide of the mark.
Baroka’s persistence in attack finally paid off, opening the scoring via the penalty spot after Mzimela’s reckless challenge in the box as Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali stepped up to convert and give his side a 1-0 lead which they took into half-time.
Following no shots on target in the first half, Dikwena went in search of the equaliser in the early stages of the second stanza, but found a stubborn Baroka defence in their way.
Yet the hosts missed a golden chance midway through the half, as neat passing and build up resulted in a low cross which fell on a silver platter for Vuyo Mere right in front of goal, yet the 400-capped veteran could not get past Oscarine Masuluke in the Baroka goal who stood firm to deny the hosts the leveller.
Chances were few and far between thereafter, with Cavin Johnson sending numbers forward in search of the elusive goal.
Substitute Ndumiso Mabena could only strike the wall from his 80th-minute free-kick, as Baroka withstood a late Dikwena surge to hold on for their first win of the 2016/17 campaign, and in the process temporarily lifting themselves off the bottom of the table into tenth, as Stars remain sixth.
