The Cape Town derby bragging rights belong to Cape Town City as they defeated Ajax Cape Town 1-0 on Friday night.
Bongolethu Jayiya scored the first ever goal in this particular fixture as his 21st minute effort at the Cape Town Stadium saw CTC end a long barren-run.
The newly-minted rivalry served up a very open affair with both sides finding plenty of space, especially on the flanks.
City had an early sighter when Lebogang Manyama touching the ball into the path Aubrey Ngoma who fired hopelessly over the bar.
Bantu Mzwakali was the next to try his luck but Shu-Aib Walters got down low and dealt with his stinging drive.
With both sides posing a serious threat to the opposition goal it was City who broke the deadlock through Jayiya as the winger made a great run towards the back post to poke home a good cross.
The ball was in the back of the at the other end just over ten minutes later but the returning Toriq Losper had fouled Vincent Kabola before firing home from outside the area.
The game remained tremendously open until the interval and Ngoma almost had a chance to double the advantage but couldn't cap off his blistering run with a good enough shot whilst Nathan Paulse could have levelled before the break but with the goal gaping was unable to make the right contact.
The two sides maintained their intensity after re-entering the field and both had chances although the respective defences held firm under pressure.
As the game went past the hour mark the home side shifted gears and attacked with a little more intent as Ngoma saw a header fly back off the upright.
Not long afterwards the powerful Judas Moseamedi squandered a glorious opportunity as he completely misdirected his header.
Ajax were not without chances of their own and as the game neared its conclusion both Paulse and Chipeta missed with close-range headers.
Paulse was again in the mix as the minutes ticked away but was denied by Walters as he attempted to fire in from a tight angle.
City should have been given the opportunity to make the game safe late on but when Jayiya was brought down in the box the penalty claims were waved away.
