Kurt Lentjies scored the winner seven minutes into the second half as he crashed home a rebound to give Maritzburg United a deserved 1-0 away win at Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday.
A stinging shot from Blessing Moyo came off the knees of Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb and the Maritzburg skipper was quickest to the rebound to banish away the blues of last season when the KwaZulu-Natal club barely survived relegation.
The result was a deserved one as Celtic looked rather listless and without much direction and conjured up just two decent chances.
The second stanza nearly provided them with a share of the points but Dumisani Zuma missed from close range after the defence failed to clear. But had it gone in it would have been something of a travesty for the toil of a much more enterprising Maritzburg
The opening chance of the game fell to former Celtic skipper Bevan Fransman, whose header from just metres out was well stopped by Tignyemb. Fransman had done well to sneak around the back of the home defence amd get a firm header onto a free-kick from Lentjies.
The second opportunity of the game came in almost identical circumstances from another Lentjies free-kick. This time Kenyan defender Brian Onyango put his header straight at Tignyemb.
Celtic were restricted to long-range shooting as they failed to get through Maritzburg’s formation of three centre-backs.
But just before half-time they should have gone ahead when Mthokozisi Dube’s cross found Lyle Lakay as Fransman failed to head clear. But Fransman recovered to block the shot by putting his body on the line.
The second half afforded few chances but Sheldon van Wyk and Deolin Mekoa could have done better with their opportunities.
