Chippa United kept intact their lengthy unbeaten home run as Rhulani Manzini scored twice in a 2-1 triumph over Free State Stars at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday.
Last season’s sixth-place finishers were last defeated at the Port Elizabeth venue in January and although they let an early lead slip never looked in much danger of losing their streak.
Manzini scored after six minutes to register the first goal of the 2016/17 campaign, set up by Thembinkosi Lorch, one of six debutants for Chippa’s new-look outfit.
Stars equalised some 10 minutes later after a comedy of home errors but Manzini restored the advantage in the 35th minute and it stayed that way until the end.
Lorch, one of several new signings from National First Division clubs, cleverly opened up the visiting defence for Manzini to finish from close range.
But then two needless corners given away by Chippa – first by James Okwuosa and then debutant goalkeeper Zama Dlamini – allowed Stars to equalise through Charles Kampi, their new signing from Polokwane who made a dream start to his career.
Chippa played a possession game but made mistakes in the second half that presented chances for Thokozani Sekotlong and Nhlanhla Vilakazi in the second half.
With five minutes left a clever backheel from Bokang Tlhone had to be cleared off the line by Marc van Heerden, who was voted man of the match on his return to the top-flight.
