Cape Town City Polokwane City PSL Absa Premiership report

Posted: 23 August 2016 Time: 19:01

Cape Town City made a positive start to their maiden Absa Premiership campaign with a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday.

The newly-formed franchise, created after the sale of Mpumalanga Black Aces, had two of their former AmaZayoni stars to thanks for the win as Bhongolethu Jayiya and Aubrey Ngoma grabbed the goals on a historic night for the side.

The win was deserved, though Polokwane had chances, but were ultimately let down by two poor pieces of defending.

The visitors went close midway through the first half when forward Puleng Tlolane turned his defender on the edge of the box, but his curling shot hit the top of the crossbar.

Home striker Lehlohonolo Majoro was superbly teed-up by Australian midfielder James Brown but could only fire his shot into the side-netting.

The home side finished the first half the stronger and had the lead with virtually the last kick.

Matt Sim picked up the ball on the left and his deep cross found its way to Jayiya, who easily beat his defender and rifled the ball into the back of the net.

Judas Moseamedi had an excellent chance to make it 2-0 for the home side but headed over from six yards, though minutes later they did double their advantage.

A quick breakaway saw skipper Lebogang Manyama lay a perfect pass into the path of former Orlando Pirates winger Ngoma and he was able to pick his spot to score.

Cape Town City now face Kaizer Chiefs in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 on Friday night, while Polokwane must wait until September 13 for their next fixture at home to Bidvest Wits.
