Bidvest Wits Kaizer Chiefs PSL Absa Premiership report

Posted: 23 August 2016 Time: 18:57

Bidvest Wits managed to hold their nerve and record a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the opening Absa Premiership match of 2016/17.

As the game drifted past the half hour mark it was Elias Pelembe who popped up with the opener and in the second half Thulani Hlatshwayo employed the same mode of scoring as he netted from a corner.

The game took another turn late in the game as Anthony Gordinho pulled one back but Wits held out for the remainder of the game.

Unsurprisingly both sides employed a cautious approach in the very early stages of the game but Wits were first to carve out a real opportunity.

It came through Daine Klate who lifted the ball onto the head of Eleazar Rodgers but his effort went wide.

Pelembe was making a major nuisance of himself out wide and pinged a cross into the area but new striker Hellings Mhango couldn't make a clean connection.

The home team eventually opened the scoring as Pelembe displayed beautiful movement in the box to meet Sfiso Hlanti's cross and turn it home via his head.

Minutes before the interval the Clever Boys almost doubled their advantage but Mhango's shot lacked ferocity and Itumeleng Khune saved well.

Early in the second half Willard Katsande was lucky not to concede a penalty for a high boot on Mhango.

Chiefs began to settle a little but still looked vunerable when they gave the ball away.

With 25 minutes remaining it was Wits who grabbed another as Hlatshwayo rose highest in the box to head home a corner.

With only a matter of minutes remaining Gordinho gave his side hope with an excellent headed goal from Twala's free kick.

The Glamour Boys tried to find a leveller and Emmanuel Letlotlo almost did in the dying moments but shot wide.
