2018 World Cup qualifier Bafana Bafana vs Senegal report

Posted: 12 November 2016 Time: 14:11

South Africa benefitted from a poor refereeing decision to edge Senegal 2-1 in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Polokwane on Saturday.

Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo and Thulani Serero scored before the break, with Cheikh Ndoye reducing the deficit in the latter stages of the Group D tie at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Hlatshwayo's 42nd minute opener came from the spot after referee Joseph Lamptey incorrectly penalised the visitors for a hand-ball in the box.

The West Africans started the contest brightly, as the lively Sadio Mane powered a header high and wide nine minutes in off a delivery from the left.

At the other end, Eleazar Rodgers failed to get on the end of a Mpho Makola cross after Rivaldo Coetzee distributed the ball out nicely to the right midway through the first stanza.

Soon after Moussa Konate thumped a shot straight down the throat of Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, while Keagan Dolly threatened in the 40th minute as his strike was comfortably gathered by Abdoulaye Diallo.

The hosts were gifted the opener by referee Lamptey two minutes later. The Ghanaian awarded a penalty after Rodgers headed a cross by Makola against the legs of a Senegalese defender in the box. Hlatshwayo made the most of the bad decision by converting from the spot.

Serero made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time with a first-time finish following a deft touch in the box by Makola.

The Teranga Lions had a great chance to pull one back in the 57th minute but Konate directed a free header wide of the target.

Dolly also squeezed an attempt wide in the area just past the hour-mark following neat interplay by substitute Bradley Grobler, on for Rodgers, and Serero.

Mame Diouf wasted another fine opportunity as he headed over from close range before Ndoye struck with 15 minutes to go, blasting home following a goalmouth scramble.

Shakes Mashaba's men held on in nervy fashion to go top of the standings, having drawn 1-1 with Burkina Faso away in their first qualifier.

Bafana XI: Khune, Hlatshwayo, Mathoho, Coetzee, Matlaba, Jali, Mabunda, Makola, Serero (Klate 80'), Rodgers (Grobler 58'), Dolly (Kekana 71').

Subs: Williams, Daniels, Mphahlele, Mbekile, Mahlangu, Vilakazi, Veldwijk, Patosi.

Senegal XI: Diallo, Mbodji, Koulibaly, Gueye, Konate (Diouf 60'), Kouyate, Mane, Diame (Ndoye 46'), Ciss, Balde, Gassama (Toure 83').
