Arrows thump Santos

Golden Arrows ended Santos’ excellent run of League form with a 3-0 beating at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday evening.
It was the Cape side’s first defeat in the League since a 1-0 loss to Celtic back in the middle of November.
The game got off to a slow-paced and rather lacklustre start as neither side seemed to be inspired to produce anything special on a hot, windless Cape Town evening.
There was in fact very little to write home about before the opening goal in the 25th minute, which came from an unlikely source in Arrows defender Siyabonga Sangweni, who was at the right place in the right time to slot home Joseph Musonda’s driven cross from the right.
The People’s Team had hardly looked threatening in the opening half-hour, but they had a great chance to equalise after 32 minutes when Erwin Isaacs found a hole in the centre of the Arrows defence and burst through on goal.
However, in taking too much time to size up his options, he allowed Abafanba Bes’thende keeper Helton Da Rocha to move off his line smartly and make an excellent block.
Another chance was soon to arrive for Santos when Graham King broke down the left flank, but his parting shot from a tight angle was just off target.
It was the Durban side however who finished the half in charge as Santos failed to create any further opportunities.
The Cape side started the second half looking far more plugged in.
Isaacs raised his game several notches and soon proved to be menace to the Arrows defence as he sent in an inviting cross which was only just dealt with.
And from King’s resultant corner, Isaacs came close when his header dipped onto the roof of the net.
The home side had an even better chance after 66 minutes when Bongi Macala picked out King at the back post, but the diminutive winger’s header was a poor effort and failed to force Da Rocha into a save.
At that stage of the game an equaliser certainly looked a possibility, but Arrows had other ideas as they secured themselves the cushion of a second goal in the 73rd minute.
Philani Shange was the goal-scorer, slotting home into an empty net after Richard Henyekane had snuck in to beat Santos keeper Francis Chansa to the ball before providing an inviting cross.
The home side nearly pulled a goal back with five minutes to play, but Isaacs had the misfortune of seeing his superb free kick rebound off the upright.
Henyekane then sealed the win when he raced through an almost non-existent Santos defence and calmly beat Chansa to curl the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
