Enyimba Mamelodi Sundowns CAF Champions League report

Posted: 23 August 2016 Time: 16:44

Mamelodi Sundowns were unable to maintain their unbeaten record in Group B as they went down 3-1 to Enyimba in a match that had no bearing on the overall standings.

The Nigerian side went ahead through Uche John before the Brazilians equalised through Percy Tau only to concede again in first half stoppage time to Mfon Udoh.

In the second half the hosts pulled even further ahead after Reece Evans conceded a penalty that was tucked away by Udoh.

'Downs got off to a pretty slow start against Enyimba on a very sodden turf in Port Harcourt and never really found their feet.

The visitors struggled to adapt to playing within the confines of a very small pitch and rarely troubled the opposition defence in the opening stages.

They eventually conceded as Sandilands was unable to keep out a venemous free kick from Uche.

It wasn't long before Sundowns were level as Tau took it upon himself to make something happen and drove into the box and was on hand to head home when Enyimba failed to clear their lines.

It looked as though the sides would go into the break deadlocked but Udoh had other ideas as he closed down Sandilands and took the ball off him before slotting home.

Five minutes into the the second stanza and Enyimba were enjoying a two goal advantage with Evans having conceded a penalty that was neatly tucked away.

Udoh was the scorer, adding to the goal he got in the first half, as the hosts began to cruise and the weather began to worsen.

Under the difficult conditions there were a number of wasted chances, most notably when Temba Zwane failed to capitalise on space at the back post and scuffed wide.

With time running out Enyimba attempted to inflict more punishment upon their visitors but a powerful shot from John was kept out well by Sandilands.
