Polokwane City Baroka FC Nedbank Cup report

Posted: 24 April 2016 Time: 14:25

Baroka FC showed scant respect for their top-flight opponents as they comfortably beat Polokwane City 2-0 in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Both goals came in the first half, with Albert Mothupa and Collins Makgaka finding the back of the net, but in truth it could have been far, far worse for Rise & Shine.

The first half was mostly a cagey affair, with the closest we came to a goal being a fine drive by Jacky Motshegwa which George Chigova saved low to his right.

That was until the 42nd minute, when Baroka took the lead through Mothupa. A free-kick from the left was headed onto the crossbar by Motshegwa, and Mothupa reacted quickest to bury the rebound from close range.

Four minutes later and the First Division leaders were 2-0 up. Man of the Match Donald Mokondelela made a powerful run down the right before squaring to Makgaka at the back-post, and he made no mistake.

Whatever Rise & Shine coach Julio Leal told his players at the break seemed to have the opposite effect, because Baroka could well have scored three more inside the opening five minutes of the restart.

First Chigova saved Mokondelela’s powerful shot from inside the area, before the winger fluffed his lines when one-on-one with the keeper.

Motshegwa’s weak volley from close-range was saved on 56 minutes, before Polokwane finally registered a shot on target - Jorry Matjila’s shot parried for a corner.

Tshepo Tema curled a shot straight at the keeper, before Chigova produced another fine save – this time a reflex one-handed effort to keep out substitute Thabiso Kutumela.

Cole Alexander thought he had scored the goal of the season five minutes from time when his drive headed for the top corner, only for Masuluke to produce a great save.

Baroka had a few more chances, but ultimately settled for the 2-0 win, which earned them a semifinal encounter with SuperSport United.

Polokwane City: Chigova, Barends, Hlongwane (Jembula 59'), Nyadombo, Tema, Nene (Kanyenda 59'), Alexander, Maluleke, Mncwango, Tlolane (Nzimande 74'), Matjila
