Kaizer Chiefs ASEC Mimosas CAF Champions League report

Posted: 12 March 2016 Time: 18:58

Kaizer Chiefs suffered their third straight defeat in all competitions after a 1-0 home defeat to ASEC Mimosas in the CAF Champions League first round.

Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela named a familiar team and bench again, with Lorenzo Gordinho back in defence. George Lebese and Reneilwe Letsholonyane were not in the squad for the FNB Stadium clash.

Komphela’s side dominated in terms of chances but were guilty of missing too many again as the likes of Camaldine Abraw, Erick Mathoho and George Maluleka in particular failed to register.

Maluleka had a chance to score before the 10-minute mark but shot wide under pressure and had another chance a few minutes later after Boti's poor backpass, but ASEC goalkeeper Koffi saved twice to deny him.

Koffi was again equal to the effort when Maluleka tried his luck from distance midway through the second half, while Mathoho and Abraw could not beat him with headers.

Maluleka had another shot off target early in the second half before he was replaced by Henrick Ekstein, who would later miss a chance in stoppage time.

Adama Bakayoko got the all-important opening goal in the 55th minute with a well-taken header, and the Ivory Coast club will take that away-goal back home for the second leg.

Komphela brought on Keegan Ritchie for Masilela shortly after the goal and also Siphelele Mthembu in the closing stages but Chiefs were unable to get back into the match despite rallying hard as Koffi made a few fine saves to keep them out, including a great save to stop a dangerous shot from Kgotso Moleko.

Chiefs: Khune, Moleko, Mathoho, Gordinho, Masilela (Ritchie 66'), Baloyi (Mthembu 83'), Katsande, Tshabalala, Maluleka (Ekstein 56'), Parker, Abraw
