Bidvest Wits Bloemfontein Celtic Nedbank Cup

Posted: 4 March 2016 Time: 21:52

Bloemfontein Celtic missed a late penalty as they crashed out of the Nedbank Cup against Bidvest Wits on Friday night.

The Clever Boys won 1-0 thanks to James Keene's clever finish midway though the first half, but it could have been a different story but for Lyle Lakay's miss from the spot with five minutes to go.

After a slow start to the match, Celtic fashioned the first opportunity when Musa Nyatama put an effort wide of the far post from just outside the box in the 10th minute.

Wits had a half chance in the 24th minute when Elias Pelembe got onto the end of a deep cross from Keene, but he mistimed his jump and got his positioning wrong and the chance was wasted.

A minute later though, and Gavin Hunt’s side took the lead. This time Daine Klate slipped a perfect through-ball in between the defensive line for Keene to run onto. The striker took one touch to steady himself and another to chip the ball over Patrick Tignyemb, who had come out of his area to close down the shot.

Wits nearly had a second goal when Tshepo Rikhotso almost steered the ball into his own net as he intercepted a dangerous looking cross by Vincent Pule.

Man of the Match Pelembe saw his curling free-kick saved by Tignyemb early in the second half, before the Mozambican let one rip from just outside the area, but the goalkeeper made the save.

In the 85th minute Nazeer Allie fouled Lamola inside the danger area, but Lyle Lakay’s penalty was saved brilliantly by Moeneeb Josephs.

In referee’s optional time Pelembe had a good chance to make it 2-0, but he could not connect properly and his shot was neither strong enough or on target.

Still, Wits had done enough to go through, while Celtic’s struggles continued – they have now won just once in 16 games.
