Santos came from a goal behind to seal a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday evening.

The match had a bit of everything – brilliant goals, near misses, shots hitting the woodwork, and goal-keeping blunders.

After a good start to the match by Santos which saw Tyren Arendse hitting the bar with a cross, it was Chiefs who took a 23rd minute lead.

Zito Ogbonna was the goal scorer, pouncing from close range after Santos keeper Francis Chansa spilled a shot by Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

Graham King nearly equalised for the home side, but his fierce shot hit the crossbar, while Erwin Isaacs wasted a great chance when he shot tamely at Amakhosi keeper Itumeleng Khune after 30 minutes.

The relentless pace and action from the first half was carried into the second stanza as both sides put in maximum effort.

Substitute Jerome Ramatlhakwana twice came close for the People’s Team before setting up Eleazar Rodgers to net the equaliser in the 70th minute.

Rodgers’ produced a superb finish as he buried the ball from a very tight angle.

Chiefs’ substitute Tshepo Bulu nearly put the Soweto side back in front with nine minutes to go, but saw his shot come back off the base of the upright.

The play quickly reverted to the opposite end of the field, where Santos scored what turned out to be the winner after Bongi Macala did just enough to force the ball over the line from close range after a scintillating run by Jurie Basie.

There was a final twist to the tale at the packed Athlone Stadium when the unfortunate Bulu thumped a 30-yard shot into the upright with the final kick of a thrilling match.
