Golden Arrows are through to the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals after a 1-0 win against MTN8 champions Ajax Cape Town today.
Gladwin Shitolo scored the winner for the hosts, while Ajax also finished the match with 10 men after a straight red shown to Anssi Jaakkola.
The Finnish keeper made a sensational stop in the 23rd minute to keep out a close-range effort from debutant Kuda Mahachi.
His opposite number, Maximilan Mbaeva, produced a similar piece of magic with a one-handed save down low to his right to parry Erwin Isaacs’ volley.
But it was Jaakkola who won the half – another brilliant reflex save to keep out a shot from Deon Hotto, who was set up by Mabhuti Khenyeza.
Ajax came close to an opener just after the restart when Ndiviwe Mdabuka hit the crossbar with a powerful shot after Arrows failed to clear their lines.
The key moment of the match came on 72 minutes, when some good build-up play down the left saw Andile Fikizolo square to Shitolo, who fired under Jaakkola’s body.
The goalie’s day went from bad to worse three minutes later when he was shown a straight red for a professional foul on Mahachi.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ajax could have levelled with a few minutes remaining, but Musa Lebusa headed over the bar from six yards out.
