The 2015 Telkom Knockout kicked off this evening as defending champions SuperSport United held off Polokwane City 2-1 in their Last 16 match-up at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
United took the lead through Thuso Phala, who dispossessed City goalkeeper George Chigova to poke home on five minutes.
Rise and Shine were level just six minutes later as Punch Masenamela squared the ball for Puleng Tlolane to finish from close range.
The goal spurred the hosts on as they enjoyed the majority of attacking play for the rest of the half, yet it was the visitors who took the lead for the second time as Phala turned provider, his nifty work down the right creating space for a low cross for Dove Wome to tuck home and restore United’s lead.
SuperSport were then reduced to ten men as Bradley Grobler was shown a straight red for needlessly stamping City’s Mfundo Phungwayo, leaving his side to play the entire second half with ten men.
Rise and Shine took the game to the visitors yet failed to make the most of their one-man advantage, Ronwen Williams in inspired form, producing a number of fine saves while also denying Tlolane from the penalty spot to preserve his side’s lead.
Matsatsantsa were able to hold on as they secured a much-needed win – just their second in all competitions this season – to progress to the Last 8 of the tournament.
