Chiefs put four past Wits

Posted: 22 November 2008 Time: 23:02

Kaizer Chiefs bounced back from their disappointing defeat to their arch rivals Orlando Pirates with a resounding 4-1 victory against Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.

Chiefs latest recruit Nigerian striker Ibe Ogbonna tried to make an early impression with a hopeful shot that didn’t test keeper Energy Murambadoro, but did get his first goal for the Amakhosi in the 31st minute.

Arthur Zwane scored in the 28th and 38th minutes with cool, carbon copy finishes. The Nigerian got his second from the penalty spot in added on time while Phikolethu Spelman got a goal for Wits from the penalty spot in the 85th.

Ogbonna started his first game with Jose Torrealba upfront and Gert Schalkwyk, a former midfielder with Wits, was deployed in midfield from where he damaged his former club.

It was a Schalkwyk pass that set Zwane up for his first goal. The well-weighted pass was coolly put beyond the reach of goalie Energy Murambadoro.

Earlier on the Zimbabwe stopper blocked a Torrealba rocket and had to react quickly as Ogbonna latched on to the loose ball struck the ball cleanly but was denied by the keeper.

Chiefs were buoyed on by their fans who clearly outnumbered the hosts supporters. Even leftback Gordon Gilbert was urged on to attack and it was his cross, after some fancy footwork, that the Nigerian hit man headed home.

The usually steady Wits defence seemed shaky and Torrealba's off the ball running bemused them. The Venezuelan dropped deep to collect and with no one marking him he had the time to spot Zwane running unmarked on the right.

Zwane gleefully accepted Torrealba's pass and made no mistake with a similar finish to the first.

Chiefs took their commanding lead in to the break but were unable to add to it in the second half.

Wits pressed hard to get back in the game but Chiefs defence was superbly marshalled by captain Jimmy Tau who thwarted Wits attacks easily. With five minutes to go Calvin Sosibo got the better of the Chiefs skipper in the big box and the referee did not hesitate to point to the spot.

Chiefs goalie Itumeleng Khune stopped Phikolethu Spelman's spot kick but the striker slotted home the rebound with ease. Then, a surging run by Thuso Phala in to the box was halted by Bienvinu Tipa and the referee again pointed to the spot.

Ogbonna made no mistake from the spot and seems the real deal in attack together with Torrealba, Schalkwyk and the man-of-the-match Arthur Zwane.

As Amakhosi's FAn guys I believe we have resolved our problem with the striker now we need to look at our defence as it is not of high quality but I beliece Isaacs will boost us when he start playing well mid field gents is going to be hide battle for prays as we seem we have more players that any of chiefs department. Keep it up Amakhosi 4 Life, let the big spending clubs feel the heat. Chiefs and Pie Rates are back with their recognition, just shortly we were chasing each other at the bottom of the Log but we are chasing each other at the top, watch the second round that will bring more pain to these small teams that gave us hassle in the beginning of the season special Arrows, Bay United, Wits and Thada Royal Zulu. SURE AMAKHOSI FANS WE ARE NOW GOING TO WATCH THE BEST, MORE FIRE MAKHOSI MORE FIRE
