Santos ease past Maritzburg

Santos got their Absa Premiership season back on track with a 2-0 win over Maritzburg United at the Athlone Stadium on Friday night.

Romano Scott and Erwin Isaacs scored for the People’s Team, while Fadlu Davids missed a penalty late on.

Santos dominated in terms of possession, but neither side really created many scoring opportunities.

The first half was a scrappy affair, with both sides failing to produce attractive football, although the visitors created the first chance midway through the half when Lynch Pule tested Francis Chansa with a good effort, but the Santos keeper was equal to the task.

However, the hosts went ahead two minutes before the break when Scott ran onto a good pass by winger Graham King, before slipping the ball into the bottom corner.

Gordon Igesund’s men showed more urgency in the second half as they went in search of an equaliser, and they should have leveled matters in the 70th minute, but Tony Tsabedze wasted a glorious chance when he shot over the crossbar from inside the area.

United were made to pay for this miss when Isaacs doubled Santos’ lead in the 81st with a superb free-kick. United should have pulled one back in the 89th minute when they were awarded a penalty following King’s foul on Tsabedze, but Davids saw his spot-kick superbly saved by Chansa.
