SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits played to a 1-1 draw in a tightly contested Absa Premiership match at the Super Stadium on Saturday night.
The result means Wits stay on top of the table with 17 points while the league champs are in third position with 14.
A free-kick by Marawaan Bantam in the 33rd minute gave the Clever Boys the lead, but a cool finish by Katlego Mashego 10 minutes later earned the defending league champs a point.
Anthony Laffor had the first chance to score when he skinned Neil Winstanley down the left-wing and then smashed the ball against Energy Murambadoro’s near post.
Wits piled on the pressure and looked for their gangly striker Dale Studzinski with aerial balls. It almost worked when keeper Denis Onyango just beat Studzinski to a cross but punched the ball into the path of Rodrigues, but the Brazilian saw his shot cleared off the line by Katza.
Liberian international Laffor and Mashego failed to combine and did not give the Wits defence much trouble. On the half hour mark Wits won a free kick 26 yards out and Bantam took on the responsibility, superbly curling the ball around the wall and beyond the outstretched Onyango.
SuperSport fought back and equalised two minutes before the break through Mashego, who set himself up with a superb first touch before blasting the ball low and hard past the Zimbabwe keeper.
The second half got off to a slow start with little goal-bound efforts from either side. Rodrigues brought out a fine save from Onyango with a long-range free kick that dipped wickedly, but the keeper was alert and tipped the ball over the crossbar.
Myeni troubled Wits with his trickery and won a free kick on the edge of the area after bemusing Byron Hendricks. Nothing came of the set-piece though but United kept on pressing, but to no avail.
SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt brought Fikru Lemessa on for Laffor, but the Ethiopian striker made little difference. On the other end Wits' Masibusane Zongo chased a long ball, got between two defenders, but was foiled by Murambadoro whom he fouled.
Mozambican international Elias Pelembe stormed down the left and set-up Fikru but the Ethiopian's bullet went wide and minutes later he tamely headed a pin-point cross to the keeper.
