AmaZulu grab three points

AmaZulu grabbed maximum points with a 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday afternoon at the Princess Magogo Stadium, in a game that saw 33 attempts on goal by the respective sides.

Usuthu dominated the first half and had their first shot on goal in the second minute when Kampamba Chintu let fly, with an ambitious effort, from about 35 yards out that Shu-Aib Walters held onto comfortably.

That was just a sign of things to come as the hosts launched a further 14 shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

The best chance of the half fell to Sthembiso Dlamini in the 18th minute; a cross from Bafo Biyela found Dlamini 12 yards out from goal but his shot was a poor one as it skimmed the wrong side of the up-right.

The problem for Celtic lay in the creative aspect in midfield and coach Mich D’Avray tried to rectify this when he pulled off Patrick Maokase in the 32nd minute and replaced him with the Malawian Fisher Kondowe.

Dumisani Ngwenya nearly broke the deadlock when he narrowly headed the ball wide from only six yards out in the 40th minute.

Celtic's first decent chance came two minutes from the break when Mark Mayambela's left footed shot from 18 yards out forced Kakonje Kalililo into a good save.

D’Avray’s men started the second half in a much better tone with their first attempt on goal coming only three minutes after the interval. Moses Spandeel delivered a good ball into the box and Kondowe rose above the defence to meet it, but unfortunately for his side he headed the ball over the cross-bar.

Celtic looked a renewed side when five minutes later they had another chance through Thabo Nthethe, also from a cross into the box, but he too headed the ball over the bar.

Phunya Sele Sele’s fighting spirit was clearly evident but it all came crashing down when Ngwenya opened the scoring for Usuthu in the 62nd minute following a good pass from Mohammed-Awal Issah to Ngwenya, who made no mistake from six yards out, to hand the hosts the win.

Celtic fans were celebrating after the game, I did not believe it. Thanks to Ngwenya.
