Khenyeza strike hands Ajax win

Mabhuti Khenyeza’s second half strike handed Ajax Cape Town a 1-0 win over defending Absa Premiership champions SuperSport United at Athlone Stadium on Saturday night.

On the balance of the overall play, the Cape side were deserved winners, while the result means they move up into fourth place in the league standings, just three behind top-of-the-table SuperSport United.

Ajax seemed keen to put the midweek loss to AmaZulu behind them as they looked motivated and full of running for most of the game, although the visitors did finish the match strongly.

The Urban Warriors looked particularly dangerous down the flanks, but a lack of quality deliveries into the box meant that the visitors’ defence did not have too many worries.

While the home side had more of the play, it was the defending champions who had the better goal-scoring chances.

They were somewhat unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty when Nazeer Allie committed a rather clumsy tackle from behind on Katlego Mashego.

In the final seconds of the half Mashego was presented with a great cross from Fikru Tefera, but failed to time his jump correctly with the result that his header did not find the target.

The Urban Warriors desperately needed to turn their first half superiority into goals and they did this in fine style, just five minutes after the restart, when they scored from a corner.

Brett Evans was the man to deliver the ball, picking out Mabhuti Khenyeza at the near post, with the striker expertly guiding his header into the far corner.

The goal was the fifth of the season for the former Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs marksman.

Ajax continued to enjoy the upper hand, yet they failed to give SuperSport keeper Arendse much work to do.

In the 73rd minute Doutie should have done better when he received the ball in space on the edge of the area, but the youngster’s shot flew well wide of the target.

In the 83rd minute Ethiopian marksman Tefera came a lot closer when he got an out-stretched foot to the ball and steered it just wide of the goal.

With two minutes left Tefera again threatened and Ajax had goalkeeper Sean Roberts to thank as he pulled off a fine save to tip the United striker’s header over the crossbar.

The home side had some nerve-racking moments in the final seconds as Shane Poggenpoel, Rudi Isaacs and Tefera all came close to finding the back of the net for SuperSport.
