Chiefs get first win of the League season

Posted: 27 September 2008 Time: 22:18

Kaizer Chiefs earned their first points of the 2008/09 Absa Premiership season when they beat Ajax Cape Town 2-0 at Loftus Stadium on Saturday night. Ajax will, however, feel aggrieved by the defeat after hitting the upright on three occasions.

Late strikes by Siphiwe Tshabalala and Arthur Zwane saw Chiefs put their defeats to Thanda Royal Zulu and Maritzburg United behind them and kick-start their League campaign on the back of their MTN8 Cup Final victory against Sundowns on Tuesday night.

After a sedate opening 25 minutes, Jose Torrealba brought the game to life when he latched onto Thuso Phala's through-ball, burst into the area, brought Sean Roberts off his line, but saw his acute angle shot go agonisingly wide.

Chiefs kept the pressure on the visitors and Tshabalala brought the best out of Roberts, forcing him to tip over from 25 yards

With Chiefs pushing forward, Ajax finally came out of their shell. Brent Evans' run down the left hand side resulted in him finding space to fire in a shot, which Itumeleng Khune did well to palm to safety. A minute later an excellent cross-field cross from Evans saw Mabhuti Khenyeza turn Mokete Tsotetsi in the Chiefs rearguard but he shot tamely at Khune's goal.

On 40 minutes the former Chiefs striker, playing with a point to prove against his former club, should have opened the scoring. Great interplay between the Ajax midfield saw Sameehg Doutie play Khenyeza into the area; he drew Khune off his line but his shot bounced off the upright.

On 60 minutes Khenyeza hit the upright again, when he wrong-footed Khune with a snap shot but the Chiefs goalminder did brilliantly to regain his balance and punch out the rebound as it came off the post.

Ajax were dominating but could not get the breakthrough as Doutie hit the post with a snap shot five minutes later.

With the game seemingly heading for a deadlock, a weak clearing header by Nazeer Allie found Tshabalala on the edge of the area, who rifled a left foot shot past Roberts to give the home side an unlikely lead.

To use up time, Muhsin Ertugral brought on Arthur Zwane for Torrealba but the veteran winger had more to offer than just time. With his first touch he disposed Mfundo Shumana of the ball and with his second he drove an unstoppable shot into the back of the net to ensure Chiefs the three points.

Ajax coach Craig Rosslee summed up his team's performance: "We had chances but we didn’t take them, and in football if you don't take your chances it comes back to haunt you."

Haunt Ajax it did and the only thing to show for their effort was an Absa Premiership Man-of-the-Match award for Khenyeza.

Ertugral was happy with his team's second half performance. "It was tough for the players, as you could see they were tired because of their efforts from Tuesday night, but they got a second air late in game and showed they were hungry for the win, hungry to beat Ajax."

Good results but not convincing 4 chiefs untill 2 the last 10 minutes.A lots of work need 2 be done b4 its 2 late, no killer passes 2 the strikers or good supply upfront, we can`t continue like the way we played 2 nite, otherwise we gonna go back 2 draws & loses i`m afraid 2 be honerst.

Nkosinathi don't be afraid cause it shows you know your soccer. Penetration only happened after Lebese came in, we were able to open running space infront of Ajax defence. Our weakest links so far are Phala, Mathebula and Tshabalala; save his goal. I think Tinashe should stop worrying about defence and start attacking like he was doing.

Then Ertugral and the Motaungs must sign players to complement what we have. It is gisgusting that we have such an ordinary bench and no striker at all.

NOW WE NEED TO SEE MORE OF OUR YOUNG BOYS IN ACTION

I am a Chiefs fan, but must say are 1 dimensional with Schalkwyk and torealba up front and no one to deliver killer passes from midfield.May we should drop Schalkwyk back to midfield with nengomashe and play Masango up front and field Lebese on the left.Lebese offers better balance to our width, Thsabalala doesn't stretch the game enough or offer us width. We haven't arrived yet, too 1 predictable. We need to dominate games or order to instill fear in other teams.

I love Chiefs and am happy at their 1st league victory. But truth be told, the creative bunch is very ordinary. Thuso Phala is utter useless. David Mathebula and Sphiwe Tshabalala are the most overated players in the team. They are weak, weak, weak, weak! Whatever they do at training that convinces the coach that he should start them ahead of others will remain a mystery. Chiefs should get a striker and let Schalkvyk dictate play from the middle and make those late runs into the box to finish off loose balls which he is good at.
And if I were the coach, I put put on transfer very fast any player who gives away possession cheaply and my 'friends' Phala, Tshabalala and mathebula are leading the pack at Chiefs in this regard.
I once pointed that Rene Richards and Siphiwe Mbambo are the most useless players Chiefs at some stage some years back and hinted that they would be bloody lucky if they have lasting careers in soccer. Where are they now? Chiefs is very good at recruiting cows mos! But its my team.

Mathebula and Tshabala prvided the much better imprved perfomance compared 2 Tuesday...This guyz are just off form they are not cows tom...however I would like 2 c Mathebula on the right wing...Gert in the Middle of the park and Rasta on the defensive role...n relegate nengomash to the bench

Lebese starting line up, left winger, Masango right winger? Tshabalala is gud at central middle, together with Tinashe, upront Torrealba and Schalkwyk, Back four: Tau was shit but let's just hold on to him for few more days, Nahayo sometimes gud, Tsotesti is damn useless?Khune good one he is coming back?
