Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United drew 0-0 at Orlando Stadium in a forgettable Absa Premiership clash on Saturday night.
The first half was lacking in quality and chances were few and far between as both sides struggled in the final third.
Maritzburg gave as good as they got and troubled Pirates on a number of occasions but could not find a breakthrough, with Brighton Mhlongo doing well to deny Sheldon van Wyk and Brian Onyango.
Pirates' best chances fell to Thamsanqa Gabuza but the striker left his shooting boots at home, offering a frustrating return up front.
Ernst Middendorp's relegation-threatened side pushed hard for a winner in the final ten minutes and were looking likely to score, but the Buccaneers actually had a clear penalty shout waved away by referee Robert Smith when Onyango went through Luvuyo Memela from behind and didn't win the ball.
In the end neither side could score, and the result means Pirates are looking over their shoulders for the top eight while Maritzburg are level on 21 points with University of Pretoria, both four points behind Jomo Cosmos with two games to play.
