Mamelodi Sundowns are PSL champions

Posted: 4 May 2016 Time: 21:35

Anthony Laffor scored a hat-trick as Mamelodi Sundowns beat University of Pretoria 3-0 to clinch the 2015/16 Absa Premiership title in style.

The Brazilians claimed a record seventh PSL title, while AmaTuks were dragged further into the relegation battle.

Sundowns needed a win to secure the title, and they wasted little time going about it as Laffor scored after just three minutes. A quick free-kick found Mzikayise Mashaba, who squared to the Liberian. He scuffed his shot, but Junior Sibande completely missed his clearance on the line.

Sundowns were rampant and Laffor almost had his second shortly afterwards after a great cross from Khama Billiat, but Sibusiso Mthethwa made a timely intervention.

However, the combination got their goal on 20 minutes - Billiat doing brilliantly to beat his marker and playing the perfect pass to the Liberian striker, who could not miss.

Sundowns dominated and almost added a third straight after the break when Wayne Arendse rose highest, but Trystan Coetsee did well save the effort.

Tiyani Mabunda then shaved the upright with a fierce drive on 50 minutes, before Keagan Dolly snapped a shot inches wide of the post.

But AmaTuks eventually broke, and it was Laffor who got his third on 59 minutes after Billiat had robbed Partson Jaure and played the striker in.

Hlompho Kekana looked to get in on the act with a trademark long-range drive with 20 minutes to go, but Coetsee produced a fine diving save to deny the midfielder.

AmaTuks had their first real chances in the last 10 minutes, with substitute Thabo Mnyamane hitting the side-netting after a strong run and Lennox Bacela shooting wide wen one-on-one.

Billiat tested Coetsee with one more volley, but it mattered little as Sundowns cruised to the win which secured the title.
