Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns played to an intense 0-0 draw in their Absa Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Urban Warriors looked fresher than the Brazilians in the first half and could have taken the lead as early as the 11th minute when Erwin Isaacs crossed for Prince Nxumalo unmarked in the area, but Denis Onyango produced a brilliant save from point-blank range.
Isaacs should also have scored for Ajax on the half-hour mark when Tashreeq Morris squared from the right, the ball richocheted off defenders and fell to him inside the six-yard area with Onyango on the floor, but he somehow scooped the ball over with the goal at his mercy.
Sundowns' best opportunity came from a set-piece as Hlompho Kekana crashed a thunderbolt of a shot against the upright from 25 yards out, with Anssi Jaakkola well beaten.
The Brazilians upped the intensity in the second half and started to enjoy more attacking possession, with Ajax playing more on the counter, which resulted in an end-to-end spectacle, but with few real chances.
Jaakkola had to be alert to push away Bangaly Soumohoro's header from Keagan Dolly's corner-kick in the 72nd minute, Mosa Lebusa had a good chance to hit the target 10 minutes later but blasted over, and there were no further goals.
The result means Bidvest Wits are still breathing down Sundowns' necks, just four points behind, and the league title is not guaranteed. Ajax remain mid-table.
