Wits go top with win

Posted: 24 September 2008 Time: 22:05

BidVest Wits moved to the top of the Absa Premiership table with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Free State Stars at the BidVest Stadium on Wednesday night.

The only goal of the game was scored by Phikolethu Spelman just before halftime, while Siyabonga Mdluli was sent off shortly afterwards as the visitors played the second half a player short.

Clifford Mulenga tested the fingertips of Kennedy Mweene in the Stars goal as the Zambian minder turned his 20-yard shot round the post on 10 minutes.

But the decisive action of a dull first half came within a three-minute spell just before halftime.

First Spelman netted with a header from Fabricio Robingues’ free-kick to give the home side the lead.

Then Stars almost got back on level terms immediately when Jonathan Mensah’s shot was brilliantly saved by Energy Murumbadoro in the home goal to keep the home side ahead.

And finally, it went from bad to worse for Stars as they were reduced to 10 men when Mdluli was quite rightly shown his marching orders for a terrible tackle on Mulenga.

Duncan Lechesa and Sthembiso Ngcobo had chances for Stars in the second half, but the visitors were always struggling at a numerical disadvantage and Wits were able to weather all they threw at them.
