Kaizer Chiefs vs Polokwane City PSL Absa Premiership report

Posted: 23 February 2016 Time: 19:04

Kaizer Chiefs and Polokwane City played to an entertaining 1-1 draw in an Absa Premiership clash that included 10 minutes of stoppage time at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.

Thobani Mncwango gave Polokwane the lead against the run of play after just over half-an-hour played, getting ahead of Willard Katsande at the near post and glancing in Jabu Maluleke's free-kick from the right edge of the area.

Lorenzo Gordinho had given away the free-kick in a dangerous area for a foul on Mncwango's hardworking strike partner Muzikayifani Ngidi, who had been proving a handful to contain and had a couple of dangerous headed attempts early on.

But five minutes later Erick Mathoho pulled Amakhosi level with a towering header from Siphiwe Tshabalala's inswinging corner-kick from the right, a very familiar combination this season.

Earlier in the game Katsande missed a sitter from four yards out, failing to finish on the bounce, unmarked, from Tshabalala's set-piece delivery. George Maluleka also missed a good chance to score from a tight angle when George Chigova made a good save.

Polokwane playmaker Maluleke hit the crossbar from a direct free-kick just before half-time. It was an open first 45 minutes of football as both sides looked to attack, with Chiefs just shading the possession and chances.

Chiefs came out in the second half and started to control the game more in midfield as Polokwane played a little more cautiously and got men behind the ball, but Chigova was in fine form to thwart every effort from the hosts, pulling off a number of good saves.

The defending champions thought they had scored in the 81st minute when Abraw netted on the rebound following good work from substitute William Twala and Sula Matovu to force another block from Chigova, but the whistle blew for what looked like an unintentional Abraw handball just before he scored.

There were 10 of minutes of added time due to injuries to various players both in regulation time and stoppage time but Chiefs were unable to find a winning goal despite a late push as Chigova saved Twala's long-range strike and Cole Alexander cleared Gordinho's 111th-minute header off the line from a last-gasp Tshabalala corner-kick.

The draw leaves the Glamour Boys seven points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who play Mpumalanga Black Aces on Wednesday.
