Thulani Hlatshwayo was the unlikely two-goal hero as Bidvest Wits beat University of Pretoria 2-1 at Bidvest Stadium on Friday night.
It was a crucial win for the Clever Boys, who were looking to keep pace with League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. They are now six points behind with 10 matches remaining.
It was an entertaining start to the match, with AmaTuks hitting the woodwork early on through Khethukuthula Zwane, Phakamani Mahlambi heading just wide and Moeneeb Josephs saving from Bongani Nyathi.
Wits took control of the game midway through the first half and deservedly got the opener on 36 minutes – Hlatshwayo heading in off the underside of the bar after being set up by Daine Klate.
It should have been 2-0 shortly afterwards when the hosts were awarded a penalty after Willem Nwedihanga fouled James Keene in the box, but Tristyn Coetsee pulled off a fine save to deny Klate.
Hlatshwayo missed two headers shortly after the break, before AmaTuks found an equaliser on 63 minutes – Thabo Mnyamane finishing off a good team move.
Coetsee pulled off a brilliant save to deny Elias Pelembe soon afterwards, but he was helpless to keep out yet another Hlatshwayo header just three minutes from time.
The defeat left AmaTuks in 15th place with just 13 points (and 12 goals) from 20 games.
