Santos secure first win of the season

Santos secured their first win of the Absa Premiership season when they beat Bay United 3-0 at Athlone Stadium on Friday night.

Tyrone Arendse, Musa Otieno and Kenwyn Manuel scored for the People’s Team, who dominated for most of match.

United tried to impose themselves on the game in the opening stages and saw three long range efforts sail high and wide of Francis Chansa’s goal, before Santos hit their stride.

Arendse should have put the hosts ahead in the eighth minute when he latched onto a superb knock down by Marvin Oakes, but the midfielder put his effort high over the bar from close range.

Santos took the lead a minute later when they were awarded a penalty after the impressive Erwin Isaacs was brought down inside the area, and Arendse made no mistake with his spot-kick, to hand David Bright’s side the lead.

The visitors were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position in the 12th minute following a foul on Linos Chalwe, with Gareth Ncaca sending his effort narrowly wide of the far post.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Mogogi Gabonamong put in a good low cross from the right flank, with Tasleem Paulse’s effort hitting the upright, and fortunately for him the ball fell kindly for Otieno, who made no mistake from close range.

Santos continued pushing forward and should have extended their margin had it not been for some poor decision making in the final third of the pitch, as well as some dubious offside calls.

The score remained 2-0 at the break.

Isaacs should have made it 3-0 in the 47th minute when he was left unmarked inside the area, but the striker’s shot from inside the six yard area, sailed high over the bar following a good corner by Graham King.

The match then endured a scrappy spell as both sides rang the changes, but Santos extended their lead five minutes from the end when Manuel headed home a cross from Macala, to hand the People’s Team a deserved victory on home soil.

Santos will be hoping to take this form into their next fixture, when they host Moroka Swallows on the 24th of this month, while Bay United will be looking to get their season on track when they host Orlando Pirates at the EPRU Stadium on the 28th September.
