Free State Stars edged Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 to grab bragging right in the Free State Derby at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.
A solitary strike from Lucky Mohomi in the 22nd minute was enough to hand the home side the three points, which take them up to sixth place for the time being.
It was a scrappy start to the match as both sides struggled to retain possession, and gave away needless fouls early on.
In the 17th minute, Ea Lla Koto's leading scorer Andrea Fileccia suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury after a horrible studs-up challenge from Mbhazima Rikhotso, who was fortunate not to be sent off by referee Victor Gomes.
Fileccia's injury forced the introduction of Sello Japhta, who immediately made his presence felt when he set up Mohomi for the opener.
A rock-solid defence ensured Stars held onto their lead at half-time , with Geofrey Massa coming closest for the visitors from a free-kick five minutes before the break.
Phunya Sele Sele pulled all stops in the second half, and threw everything including the kitchen sink at Stars, but they were unable to find a break through, thanks largely to Dauda Diakite's heroics in goal for the hosts.
In the 59th minute, substitute Lerato Lamola came close to finding the equaliser with a lobbed effort, but Diakite was up to the task.
10 minutes from time, another substitute Dumisani Zuma was unlucky to see his effort strike the upright after finally getting the beating of the Burkina Faso shotstopper.
The defeat for Celtic sees Serame Letsoaka's side extend their winless run to nine games and surrender their place in the top eight.
