Absa Premiership: Platinum Stars vs Free State Stars

Posted: 17 January 2016 Time: 14:36

Italian coach Giovanni Solinas started his reign at Free State Stars with a 2-1 victory over Platinum Stars in the Absa Premiership on Sunday.

Stars striker Moeketsi Sekola scored a late winner from the spot after his teammate Paulus Masehe cancelled out Ndumiso Mabena's first-half opener at Moruleng Stadium.

Solinas, who received his work permit earlier in the week, was appointed to the Ea Lla Koto hotseat in December after Ernst Middendorp switched alliances to Maritzburg United.

The visitors began the game positively with Bokang Thlone curling the ball into the Dikwena box in the fourth minute and goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela being forced to make a save with his feet.

Dikwena dribbling wizard Masibusane Zongo unleashed a shot from range in the 12th minute which sailed over the goal-posts.

In the 21st minute Ea Lla Koto midfielder Lucky Mohomi fired an effort at goal but former AmaZulu keeper Mzimela denied him with a diving save.

Mohomi again tested Mzimela in the 32nd minute with a shot from just outside the Dikwena box.

However, it was Dikwena who found the opening goal through Mabena with two minutes left before the half-time break.

Ea Lla Koto responded with a goal six minutes after the restart via former Orlando Pirates man Masehe.

The visitors continued to dominate and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 81st minute with a penalty, which was duly coverted by Sekola in the last decisive play of the game.

The result leaves Ea Lla Koto in eighth place on the table with 18 points from 13 games - two points behind sixth-placed Dikwena.
