Orlando Pirates made hard work of it but eventually beat University of Pretoria 2-0 in their Absa Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.
Thabo Matlaba and Sifiso Myeni scored the goals early and late in the second half after goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo kept Tuks at bay with several fine saves in the first half.
Mhlongo was in fine form in his first game since August last year as he saved shots from ex-Buccaneer Lennox Bacela, Thabo Mnyamane and Bongani Nyathi, including a fantastic double-save.
Pirates were not at their best in the first half but also created a few chances that Issa Sarr and Kermit Erasmus could not convert under pressure from Tuks defenders. The teams went into the half-time break locked at 0-0.
However, Eric Tinklers's side got exactly the kind of break they needed right after the restart as Bucs caught Tuks sleeping, Kermit Erasmus releasing Matlaba down the left and the full-back unleashing a perfect left-footed shot over Washington Arubi at his near post and into the roof of the net.
The goal injected some energy into Pirates' attacking play and they created more opportunities to add to the scoreline thereafter, but were again wasteful in front of goal.
That was, until substitute Thabo Qalinge made the telling impact late on, getting down the left flank and putting in a dangerous cross that the Tuks defence failed to clear after a few deflections between themselves, and Sifiso Myeni swept home the easist of goals to seal the points.
The result brings some relief to the Bucs camp as they return to winning ways and piles more pressure on Tuks, who are further entrenched in a relegation battle.
