Free State Stars made the most of their home advantage as they beat Jomo Cosmos 1-0 at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.
A second-half goal from substitute Hendrick Somaeb was enough to hand Ea La Koto the three points in their final match before the festive break.
Stars and Cosmos had to contend with teh scorchig heat in Bethlehem, which warranted the slow start to proceedings as both teams lacked impetus in the opening stages.
The best chance of the first half fell the way of the home side came in the ninth minute, when Danny Venter found some space outside the Comos area but his effort went straight to Sherwyn Naicker.
Ezenkosi failed to register a shot on target in the first stanza, as both teams went into the break with the scoreline a fair refelection of the match at 0-0.
A double sub from Ernst Middedorp at the break saw Someab and Makhehlene Makhaula replacing Mrisho Ngasa and Katlego Mashego respectively.
The changes yielded results as Stars mustered the opening goal 15 minutes after coming on, when the Namibian striker latched onto the end of Jaftha's cross to head home for the home side.
Cosmos surged forward in attack but the Stars defence held firm to deny Ezenkosi a way back into the tie.
Cosmos had their best chance of the match when Daouda Diakite denied Vilakazi from close range in the 80th minute.
The Free State side managed to hold on for the full three points and jumped into 10th place on the Absa Premiership log ahead of SuperSport United, with 15 points.
