Afcon 2015 match report: Senegal 1-1 South Africa

Posted: 23 January 2015 Time: 23:13

South Africa were held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal in their Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash in Mongomo on Friday night.

During a physical first half in which both Lamine Gassama and Sibusiso Vilakazi were lucky to escape cautions, South Africa suffered another defensive blow as Thulani Hlatshwayo had to be replaced by Ayanda Gcaba in the 29th minute due to what looked like a concussion and blurred vision.

South Africa took the lead right after half-time when Anele Ngcongca's cross from the right evaded everybody in the box and fell kindly for Manyisa at the far stick, who slotted into the bottom-right corner with aplomb.

Bafana Bafana upped the tempo after going one ahead but looked susceptible at set-pieces, with Jackson Mabokgwane unconvincing in goal.

Mabokgwane was not helped by his defenders either as both Molomowandau Mathoho and Ngcongca were guilty of losing their men while defending set-plays.

The warning signs were there in the 57th minute when Senegal were allowed another free header at the far post from a set-piece, and after Mabokgwane allowed the header back across goal to fall at the feet of an attacker, there was relief as the flag went up for offside.

But the defence was eventually punished in the 60th minute when Mathoho allowed Kara Mbodji to get a run-up at the far post to get up and power a header past Mabokgwane, who was caught between coming and staying.

Bafana tried hard to get back into the match but showed too little creativity in attack, with Senegal easily snuffing out any through-balls from an off-form Andile Jali.

Even the experience of substitutes Bernard Parker and Reneilwe Letsholonyane was unable to spark a revival following their introductions.

The result leaves Bafana needing to win against Ghana in their final group game and hoping other results to go their way.
