Platinum Stars vs Chippa United Telkom Knockout

Posted: 4 October 2014 Time: 14:36

Defending champions Platinum Stars are through to the Telkom Knockout Cup quarterfinals after beating Chippa United 1-0 in Rustenburg.

The only goal of the game came with five minutes remaining - Nigerian defender James Okwuosa slotting the ball past his own keeper.

Dikwena had an early chance through Eleazar Rodgers, but he shot well over on seven minutes.

Chippa looked certain to score 10 minutes later when Mpho Mvelase found himself one-on-one with Kabelo Dambe, but the keeper easily came out on top.

David Zulu though he had scored just before the break, only to see his shot cleared off the line by Luvolwethu Mpeta.

Zulu came close again just past the hour-mark with a long-range effort, before striking the crossbar from a tight angle.

Against the run of play, Stars got the deciding goal five minutes from time when Okwuosa deflected Mahlatse Makudubela’s cross past his keeper to send the champs through to the quarterfinals.

Now Mabena is back on the bench.  the boy was playing well and scoring goals this will demoralize him and remind him of his days at Pierats

While watching this game, it is painfully clear just how clue-less Allan Freese is. He has such good players, but he is choosing the wrong tactics: Just because Eleazar Rodgers has some height, it does not mean that all the balls should be long and high. The guy is also very good with his feet, so, how about you keep the ball on the ground? And how do you start Dambe ahead of Mpontshane?

Cavin Johnson has been fired at Supersport. It's about time the management of Platinum Stars brought him back and sent Freese back to development. He was good at extracting results out of Cavin Johnson's team, but once he had to build his own team after the transfer window decimation of Johnson's team, his shortcomings have been painfully exposed.

I don't know what management is hoping for: Freese cannot cope, finish and klaar! Bring Johnson back, after all, we are known for our reconciliation ability.

I've got to admit, the boys are playing much better now. Seems I will have to eat some humble pie.

I hope my team has risen from dead with this win. Let's be honest, the Platinum Stars that we all know has been missing in action for a while now.

What happened to Zulu today? The boy scores one goal against Pirates and everyone talks about how brilliant he is. I didn't see any thing good today from him. These boys only rise to the occasion when they playing big teams.

KhosieGP In all honesty, I also thought Platinum Stars were pathetic against Chiefs, but then Chiefs went on to win all the league games, and the TKO too, the latter without conceding a goal. Imagine that! So, credit to Chiefs for their excellent run of form.

Now, after what I saw today in the second half, it seems like Dikwena could be back to their winning ways, therefore, I wouldn't be too surprised if, like last year, they are the ones to once again derail the unstoppable train, or shoot this supersonic jet from the sky. Just saying lol
