League champions Kaizer Chiefs suffered only their third defeat of the Absa Premiership season when they lost 2-1 to Bidvest Wits at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was a quick start to the game for Wits after taking the lead in the fifth minute when a Ben Motshwari free-kick into the box was headed home by Henrico Botes.
After being surprised early on, especially conceding at a set-piece, Chiefs took the game by the scruff of the neck and began dictating terms.
Still, the home side’s first shot on goal only came in the 25th minute when a ball into the box from Willard Katsande was brought under control by George Maluleka, but he saw his 16-yard shot well saved.
The Students suffered a set-back in the 26th minute when their star player and captain Sibusiso Vilakazi had to leave the field injured. He was replaced by Paseka Sekese.
His absence saw the away side’s confidence take a dip, and their problems were compounded ten minutes later when Siphiwe Tshabalala drew Chiefs level with a spectacular 22-yard free-kick.
Chiefs dominated play thereafter, but could not add to the score before the break.
The home side continued to dictate the flow of play at the start of the second 45, but were caught on the break in the 58th minute when a swift counter attack saw a left wing cross from Tebogo Moerane headed home by Sekese.
Ten minutes later Josephs had to come to the rescue of Wits when he produced a great save to deny Tshabalala from long range.
Mandla Masango came close to finding his side’s second equaliser in the 88th minute when he got on the end of a long ball by Tshabalala and proceeded to chip the keeper, but he saw his effort spectacularly cleared off the goal-line by Buhle Mkhwanazi.
Wits held on for the win to hand Chiefs only their third defeat of the League season, but Mamelodi Sundowns' win against SuperSport United means they can't finish second.
