PSL report: Sundowns vs SuperSport United

Posted: 6 May 2015 Time: 19:21

Mamelodi Sundowns secured second spot in the League behind champions Kaizer Chiefs with a 2-1 win over Tshwane rivals SuperSport United on Wednesday night.

Mzikayise Mashaba struck either side of Jeremy Brockie's 23rd minute goal for Matsatsantsa at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

The result ensures Pitso Mosimane's side will be returning to the CAF Champions League, while seventh-placed SuperSport continue to fight for a ticket to next season's MTN8.

Mashaba opened the scoring for the visitors in the third minute. The former Free State Stars man, who has been deployed in a more advanced role by Mosimane of late, latched onto a low cross by Anthony Laffor before slotting past Ronwen Williams at his near post.

Sibusiso Khumalo saw his powerful effort easily gathered by Denis Onyango before Brockie levelled matters with an unstoppable shot from inside the area.  The New Zealand international netted his sixth league goal of the season following a neat interchange between Thuso Phala, who registered his 13th assist of the campaign.

Mashaba went close to adding to his goal tally on the night with a half-hour on the clock. The midfielder made a perfectly timed run into the box, but was brilliantly denied by Thabo September, who threw his body in front of the ball.

Phala went close to putting Matsatsantsa in front on the cusp of half-time. The speedy winger weaved his way into the area before sending his shot across the face of goal.  The Bafana Bafana wide man could've had a hat-trick before the hour, but was denied on both occasions by Onyango.

Mashaba restored the Brazilians’ lead in the 61st minute, rounding off a swift move by the visitors with a first time shot after being put through on goal by Khama Billiat.

SuperSport pushed forward in an attempt to secure a point, but Downs held on to secure a vital three points.
