Free State Stars vs Bidvest Wits PSL preview

Posted: 29 April 2015 Time: 18:15

Hendrik Somaeb scored the only goal of the game to see Free State Stars beat Bidvest Wits 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at Goble Park on Wednesday.

Ea Lla Koto pick up three much-needed points as they move up to 31 points on the League table while Wits' quest for third stutters again.

It was a slow start to the match with neither side taking the ascendancy early on as both teams wasted possession with poor passing and bad decision-making in the final third.

The first real shot on goal came from a Wits free-kick 15 minutes in, but Sandile Zuke saw his 25-yard effort well saved by the goalkeeper.

Daouda Diakite was called into action again on the 20-minute mark, this time turning a stinging effort from Henrico Botes around the post.

Somaeb was Stars’ main threat in attack and had his first significant effort on goal in the 25th minute, but Moneeb Josephs was on hand to make a good save.

Ten minutes later Somaeb worked himself into space on the edge of the box again, but this time his shot sailed inches over the target.

Tebogo Moerane had the last shot of the half in injury time, but Diakite was on hand yet again to make another superb save. The half ended 0-0.

The second half started on a bad note for Free State who saw Paulus Masehe shown a straight red card for a studs-up tackle on Zuke.

With the home side reduced to ten men they sat back in defence and tried to hold on for a point. Wits saw more of the ball but struggled to break down a resilient Ea Lla Koto defence.

Instead, the goal came at the other end with Somaeb giving the home side the lead in the 75th minute, 1-0.

The Students tried to find their way back into the game but were unable to do so as Stars picked up a valuable three points.
