A brace from Menzi Masuku set Orlando Pirates on the way to a 4-1 hammering of SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was an action-packed match throughout, with the defences seemingly non-existent at times as goals and chances on goal came with nearly every play.
The game got off to a fast-paced start, with chances for both sides in the opening minutes as Menzi Masuku saw the ball coming off his knee before brushing the woodwork, while Kingston Nkhatha’s glancing header flew just over the bar.
With 15 minutes played, the Tshwane side went in front when Thuso Phala burst through the heart of the Bucs defence before showing a cool head to beat Pirates keeper Brighton Mhlongo for the game’s opening goal.
Pirates attempted to reply with a neat move around the box, but it ended with Kermit Erasmus scuffing his shot wide from only 10 yards out.
The visitors though could have made it 2-0 inside 20 minutes when Phala was again set free, this time by a Jeremy Brockie pass, but Mhlongo was quickly off the line to make the block.
The Soweto side wasted an excellent chance to restore parity 10 minutes before the break when Happy Jele was off target with a header from a corner kick.
But the hosts were to score two quick-fire goals within three minutes of each other to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
Masuku was first to strike, looping a close range header over Matsatsantsa keeper Ronwen Williams after some neat interplay in the 43rd minute, before Erasmus gave the Sea Robbers the lead in first half added time, capitalising on a mistake from Williams.
SuperSport had the first chance of the second half, Ennocent Mkhabela nearly finding the net from a Phala corner on 47 minutes.
But it was at the other end that the next goal came, and what a goal it was as Masuku picked the ball up near the half-way line on 55 minutes, driving towards goal before unleashing a rocket of a shot into the top corner from well outside the big box.
It took just six minutes for the next goal to arrive, Sifiso Myeni netting with a clinical low drive from the right hand side of the box after good work from Thabo Matlaba to set him up.
There were chances for both sides to add to the score-line, but Brockie and Bradley Grobler were denied by Mhlongo, while Erasmus had an effort saved by Williams’ feet before substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro hit the side-netting late on.
