A headed goal in injury time by substitute Mohau Mokate gave Maritzburg United victory over Ajax Cape Town in their Absa Premiership at Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday night.
After a slow start to the match where both teams felt each other out for a good ten minutes, it was Kurt Lentjies with the first attempt on goal after 14 minutes when his shot flew across the face of goal.
But the visitors then slowly got into their groove and settled down resulting in a chance on goal when Keagan Dolly pounced on lost ball possession, passed to Abbubakar Mobara, who fired in a shot that was well saved by Shuaib Walters in the 23rd minute.
A few moments later Dolly fired in a shot at goal, but it hardly made Walters work to make a save.
Ajax, on the half hour mark, saw Toriq Losper’s shot saved by Walters again.
Inside the final five minutes of the opening stanza, Ajax really should have taken the lead from Franklin Cale’s deep cross, but an unmarked Mosa Lebusa failed to hit the target with his header.
After the break, Ajax started well again when Dolly saw his shot saved in a one-on-one scenario with the impressive Walters.
Maritzburg midfielder Mondli Cele put an effort wide in the 64th minute before Ryan de Jongh’s shot did little to trouble Anssi Jaakkola.
It looked as if Ajax had found the winner in the 83rd minute but Walters did well to tip Lebusa’s header onto the upright.
Ajax were then made to pay for their missed chances when the home team substitute Mokate scored with a header from Deolin Mekoa’s supply in referee’s optional time.
