AmaZulu continued their good form with an important 1-0 victory over Free State Stars at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Mbulelo Mabizela’s second half goal gave the hosts victory as they kept their hopes of survival alive.
Bornwell Mwape wasted an opportunity early on as AmaZulu signalled their intent, before returning striker Bongani Ndulula also wasted a chance minutes later, failing to take a shot when he had the time.
The last chance for Usuthu before end of the first half was created again by Mwape who supplied a cross for Ndulula, who was just out of reach.
This saw the two teams going into the break goalless.
Mbulelo Mabizela was finally rewarded for his tenacity as he netted a rebound 10 minutes into the second stanza, giving Usuthu a 1-0 lead.
Stars kept on searching for an equalizer but were unable to trouble the AmaZulu defence.
Mabizela came close to doubling the lead, yet could only header a Marc van Heerden free-kick over the cross bar.
Mwape came close to finding the back of the net for AmaZulu late on, but his long-range shot hit the woodwork in the 85 minute.
The hoists were delighted with their three points at the final whistle, leaving them just two points adrift from joint second-from-bottom Moroka Swallows and Free State Stars.
