Mamelodi Sundowns Chippa United PSL report

Posted: 18 March 2015 Time: 18:56

Mamelodi Sundowns put another nail in Ernst Middendorp's coffin following a 3-0 beating of Chippa United at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening.

An own-goal from Mbhuyiselo Sambu, a spot-kick from Teko Modise and a late strike from Rodney Ramagalela kept the Brazilians within reach of Kaizer Chiefs, while for Chippa another defeat leaves them in the relegation battle, with their winless run now at 12 games.

Eager to keep the heat on Chiefs, Sundowns went in search of an early goal and got one thanks to a blunder at the back.  Sambu guided a seemingly harmless Cuthbert Malajila cross into the back of his own net with four minutes on the clock.

The goal ignited a free-flowing half which presented both teams with opportunities to add to the scoreline.

Siyanda Zwane had teammate Ramahlwe Mphahlele to thank for keeping Downs’ noses in front in the 17th minute. Zwane's slip let in George Akapabio, but Mphahlele was there to spare the fullback's blushes.

Sundowns had several chances to double their lead before the break, with Modise, Zwane, Tebogo Langeman and Hlompho Kekana firing their respective long-range efforts wide of Mbongeni Mzimela's goal.

The Brazilians strengthened their grip on the game three minutes into the second half when Modise converted from the spot after Siyanda Zwane was brought down inside the area.  Modise's cool finish took his goal tally in the League to six.

The visitors dominated the ensuing half-hour, but to no avail as Sambu squandered a chance to make up for his earlier error, blazing his effort from inside the area over Denis Onyango's crossbar.

Downs had a chance to kill off the game, but Khama Billiat failed to capitalise on a goalkeeping blunder by Mzimela. The Chippa stopper passed straight at the Zimbabwean attacker, who somehow managed to mess up the chance.

Second-half substitute Ramagalela scored his second goal in as many league games, running onto Billiat's pass before slipping the ball under an onrushing Mzimela.
