Orlando Pirates have sent out a warning ahead of the Soweto derby with a fourth successive League win, this time beating Polokwane City 3-1 at Orlando Stadium.
Goals by Mpho Makola, Kermit Erasmus and Oupa Manyisa gave the Sea Robbers the deserved three points.
However, as early as the first minute the visitors showed their intentions as they attacked Eric Tinkler’s men, with Brighton Mhlongo forced to palm away Cole Alexander’s shot.
Seconds later though, the hosts retaliated and found the back of the net when Makola netted from Thabo Matlaba’s cross after a lightning quick counter-attack.
Rise and Shine continued to put Pirates under pressure as they probed for an equaliser, and in the 11th minute Puleng Tlolane nearly beat Mhlongo at his near post, but his effort hit the side-netting.
With 10 minutes to go before half-time, the hosts regained possession and found their way through to City’s half when Mhlongo delivered a long pass which was flicked on for Erasmus by a defender under pressure from Issa Sarr, and the striker chipped the oncoming Modiri Marumo.
And just three minutes later it was 3-0 after Bhekithemba Mmema fouled Matlaba in the area and gave away a penalty, which was converted by captain Manyisa.
As the second half got underway, the Citizens came back with a bang and with one minute into the half a free-kick from the left by skipper Jabu Maluleke found Tshepo Tema’s header, which beat Mhlongo.
City started to dish out good football and two minutes after the goal Esau Kanyenda fired a powerful shot wide as Pirates went to sleep.
The big Malawian striker nearly found the back of the net in the 69th minute when he connected with Maluleke’s cross, but Mhlongo was awake and collected with ease.
In the last 10 minutes the Citizens had a number of chances, including another Kanyenda shot which sailed inches wide and Maluleke’s curler from the edge of the area which Mhlongo tipped onto the woodwork.
However, Pirates were comfortable winners to move up to fourth in the Absa Premiership standings, 12 points behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
