A goal by Terrence Mandaza rescued a point for Maritzburg United against Chippa United in the Absa Premiership after George Akpabio had opened the scoring in Port Elizabeth.

Substitute Mandaza netted in the 79th minute following good work by Mohammed Anas.

In the first half, Nigerian forward Akpabio had given the home side the lead after an assist by Gert Barends.

Chippa looked especially threatening when Akpabio put a third minute header wide of the target following a cross by Siyabulela Shai.

But overall, for the first half-hour of the game there were few genuine scoring chances created as both sets of players battled each other in the physical challenges.

It took until the 28th minute for a scoring opportunity, but Maritzburg midfielder Nhlanhla Vilakazi missed the target, and with six minutes to go until the half-time break Chippa took the lead when Akpabio hit the back of the net with a right-footed shot.

On the 60-minute mark, Vilakazi was at it again, this time his powerful shot was parried away by Mbongeni Mzimela and his attacking teammate Ashley Hartog could not do anything with the loose ball.

But then late on Maritzburg got their equaliser when Mandaza made no mistake from a good scoring position.

Andile Mbenyane came close to another Chippa goal when his 79th minute shot was tipped over the bar by Maritzburg goalkeeper Virgil Vries.
