Moroka Swallows held on to record their first clean sheet of the season as they kept Bloemfontein Celtic to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership encounter at Free State Stadium on Sunday.
The stalemate sees the Dube Birds move out of the relegation zone and into 14th spot on the log standings, while Siwelele remain in 10th having successfully ended their three game losing streak.
Dumisani Zuma was very unlucky not to hand Siwelele the lead with 11 minutes on the clock. The 19-year-old tore Swallows’ defence apart before unleashing a powerful effort at goal, his shot had Greg Etafia beaten, but not the crossbar.
Swallows looked threatening from set-pieces, with Rudi Isaacs proving the unlikely threat in front of goal.
First the Dube Birds defender flashed his effort from an acute angle just wide before going even closer to finding the opener moments later, Patrick Tignyemb forced into a good save to deny the former SuperSport United man from a pin-point Lerato Chabangu corner-kick.
Neither side failed to test either keeper in the closing stages of the first half, with the teams heading into the tunnel at the break having failed to trouble the scoreboard.
Fani Madida introduced veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe and former Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars midfielder Mthokozisi Yende, who had signed for the club in the week, after the hour mark as the Dube Birds went in search of all three points.
Goal-scoring chances continued to be at a premium in a cagey second-half, with the best opportunity falling Vvuyisile Wana’s way in the 84th minute.
Wana, who recently received a Bafana Bafana call-up for South Africa’s game versus the Ivory Coast last month, saw his powerful effort from range tipped onto the post by Tignyemb.
The game ultimately ended all square with neither team worthy of all three points for what was a rather poor game from an attacking perspective.
