PSL Absa Premiership match report: Maritzburg United 1-2 Moroka Swallows

Posted: 26 November 2014 Time: 20:37

Siyabonga Nomvete came off the bench and scored a brace to help Moroka Swallows secure a 2-1 win away to Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday evening.

The victory is the Birds’ first since late August, while the Team of Choice suffered their first home loss this season.

Swallows created the first chance of the match as early as the fifth minute, but Vuyisile Wana was guilty of shooting off target and failing to trouble goalkeeper Virgil Vries.

As the first half wore on, Maritzburg took control of the game and looked the likelier scorers, with Kwanda Mngonyama and Terrance Mandaza both shooting off target.

On 28 minutes the home side opened the scoring through Thokozani Sekotlong, who provided a neat finish past Greg Etafia after great set-up play by Nhlanhla Vilakazi.

A set-piece opportunity for Maritzburg almost saw them double their lead a few minutes before the break, but Ghanaian defender Mohammed Awal put his header over the crossbar.

The Birds again created a scoring chance for Wana soon after the restart, but once more he failed to draw Vries into action.

The speedy Wana made way for veteran striker Nomvethe just past the hour-mark as Swallows looked to force their way back into the game.

The former Bafana Bafana man had to wait a while to make an impact, but on 84 minutes he was able to head home Sandile Sibande’s cross to make it 1-1.

A share of the spoils would have represented a good result for the Birds, but they snatched all three on offer when Nomvete netted his second goal, converting an assist from Lerato Chabangu in injury-time to make it 2-1.

It was long coming, they are not the worse team in the PSL. They deserve to finish in the top 8.

When teams struggle the coach gets the boot, then the players start producing positive results. I just wish the rest of the teams will be keeping their technical squads as we have lost so many it’s we are nearing the end of our 1st half for the ABSA PL. This team has a great set of players who should have given the poor coach the required results. Am happy for the WIN and well-done to Bhele.
