PSL Absa Premiership: Kaizer Chiefs vs Maritzburg United

Posted: 27 September 2014 Time: 19:40

Kaizer Chiefs beat Maritzburg United 1-0 in their Absa Premiership clash at FNB Stadium courtesy of a Mandla Masango penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Tsepo Masilela was adjudged to have been pulled down in the penalty area by Abel Mabaso, with the left-back going down theatrically after an apparent pull, but referee Phillip Tinyani had no hesitation.

That goal proved enough as Stuart Baxter's side made it seven wins out of seven in the League and 11 wins in all competitions this season.

In a rather slow-tempo, tactical first half Chiefs bossed the majority of the possession with Steve Komphela's side happy to sit back in their final third to keep things tight.

George Maluleka had the ball in the back of the net when he lobbed the onrushing goalkeeper after running onto an outside-foot through-ball from Masilela, but the flag was raised for offside. However, replays showed that it was the incorrect decision from the linesman.

Chiefs created a few more good chances to break the deadlock, with Maluleka guilty of some profligacy in front of goal.

The clearest chance fell to Maluleka when he won possession high up the field and played it to Parker, who returned it to him in a three-on-one situation, but the midfielder tried to pass it back to Parker for a tap-in when a first-time shot might have been better.

Moments later Parker again found Maluleka, this time with a pinpoint cross from the left, but the former SuperSport United man could not get enough contact on his header from the penalty spot as it glanced harmlessly wide.

Maritzburg only had a Mondli Cele strike that went just wide of the post and a Kambulani Banda header that took a deflection before landing on the roof of the net, but they were only half-chances.

In the second half the Team of Choice didn't show much ambition to get back into the match as Chiefs continued to dominate proceedings, creating more chances for Masango, Bernard Parker and Reneilwe Letsholonyane late in the match.

But 1-0 it ended as the MTN8 champions kept up their fine form in the League.
