Bidvest Wits came out 2-0 victors in their Absa Premiership fixture against AmaZulu, thanks to goals from Thulani Hlatshwayo and Vincent Pule at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday evening.
The two sides came into the match showing some hunger after the week-long break due to the MTN 8 Final, with chances aplenty falling either way.
The AmaZulu defence was under threat as soon as the 8th minute, when the goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball, resulting in a scramble inside the 6-yard box.
Bornwell Mwape had a chance at the opposite end after a good ball behind the Wits defence, but the striker scuffed his shot over Josephs’ goal.
The Students opened the scoring in the 39th minute through Thulani Hlatshwayo, who was unmarked at the back post, and headed home from Dillon Sheppard’s well-taken set-piece.
AmaZulu coach Craig Rosslee reacted immediately with a tactical substitution as Paul Were Ooko was replaced by striker Ayanda Dlamini in the 42nd minute.
Usuthu got the ball in the net in the 44th minute but the far-side official flagged for offside. However, replays showed that linesman’s call was incorrect and AmaZulu were denied a headed goal from Robyn Johannes.
The second half got off to a slow start, but the Durban-side pushed forward to try and get the equaliser, but Josephs did excellently to keep a clean sheet and deny AmaZulu from getting back into the game.
22-year-old Vincent Pule got his first top-flight goal, and doubled Wits’ lead, in the 67th minute after Kapini allowed a low cross to slip through his hands for the midfielder to tap into an empty net.
Wits could have scored another in the dying minutes after substitute Henrico Botes saw his effort hit the up-right after getting the beating of goalkeeper Kapini.
The win for Wits sees the Students move into third, behind Ajax Cape Town on 13 points, while AmaZulu stay rooted to the bottom of the table with three points from seven matches.
