Kwanda Mngonyama’s opening goal was cancelled out by Moeketsi Sekola as Maritzburg United and Free State Stars shared the spoils.
Both teams dropped a place on the Absa Premiership table following their 1-1 draw at Goble Park on Saturday.
While a win for Maritzburg could have seen them up to third on the table, instead, the point, combined with Orlando Pirates' 3-0 win over Polokwane City, saw the Team of Choice drop one spot to sixth place.
Maritzburg now have eight points from five league games, while Free State are in seventh place with seven points from as many matches.
It was the worst possible start for the home team who found themselves a goal behind after only two minutes, as Mngonyama bundled the ball home from close range.
Stars tried to find their way into the game, but their imagination in the final third was poor and consequently they had to shoot from long range, but with very little effect.
The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the away team.
Free State started the second 45 on the attack and managed to draw level in the 56th minute. Sekola found the back of the net with a sublime finish after latching onto a long ball from the back, 1-1.
The goal appeared to awaken the United team and they began playing some decent football of their own.
In the 72nd minute Bruce Mtshali had to be at his best to turn a stinging shot from Maritzburg’s Khumbulani Banda around the post.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the final ten minutes, but without reward.
