PSL Match Report: Maritzburg United 2-1 Polokwane City

Posted: 13 August 2014 Time: 22:01

Kwanda Mngonyama scored his first goal for Maritzburg United as a disappointed Polokwane City went down 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Level at the break thanks to goals from Mohau Mokate and Puleng Tlolane, Mngonyama broke City hearts in the 60th minute to hand Polokwane their first defeat of the new season.

Rise and Shine were forced into an early change when Sipho Jembula was ruled out with a knock, making way for Rendani Ndou.

Ndou was in the thick of the action straight away and forced Maritzburg goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters into an early diving save just after 10 minutes.

The visitors were in the ascendency and saw Puleng Tlolane coming close, but denied by Walters, who looked to be the busier of the goalkeepers during the early exchanges.

Maritzburg, however, were resolute and soon found themselves in the lead when Mokate bagged the opener in the 28th minute, thanks to some superb interplay between Thami Mkhize and Kurt Lentjies, setting Mokate up for a simple finish, leaving a stunned Polokwane City wondering how they fell behind.

It didn’t last long and within seven minutes Polokwane were level. Tlolane’s stunning free-kick snuck into the top corner of Walters’ goal and by the interval, the pair were locked at 1-1.

Heavy drama followed shortly after the break as both teams were reduced to 10 men, as United’s goalscorer Mokate and Polokwane’s Elias Ngwepe were both dismissed with straight red cards.

The home side paid little attention to the controversy and went ahead on the hour-mark thanks to a good finish from Sundowns loanee Mngonyama, who netted from a corner at the far post to send the hosts back in front with his first goal for his new team.

A well-organised defensive effort saw United slow the play down as they looked to run down the clock, while Polokwane tried in vain to make inroads.

In the end, a deserved win for United who now have four points from their first two games and have set a solid platform early in the new season.
